In 2020, Chevron began an ambitious lift-and-shift effort to migrate the entirety of its on-premises Geophysical and Reservoir Simulation clusters to Azure. As part of this effort, Chevron created a dedicated physical Lustre storage solution in Azure to support Chevron’s cloud HPC workflows with a high-performance, parallel file system solution like the one already in use at Chevron’s on-premises data center. In 2024, Chevron needed to replace this physical Lustre system, and set about evaluating cloud-hosted alternatives, settling on the Azure-hosted storage offering from WEKA. The migration to the WEKA solution was completed in May of 2025.
This presentation will discuss the history of Chevron’s Lustre usage, how our environment and workflows evolved as we migrated into the cloud, and the evaluation process and decision making that led us to choose WEKA’s product offering. We will also provide technical details on the architecture of WEKA’s Azure storage solution, specifically focusing on the additional capabilities offered by a cloud-based solution. Finally, we will offer some reflections on the experience of operating WEKA in production as we approach one year after go-live.
